MAIN LIGHTING - ATA 33 12 - Part 3

Illumination of local areas of the flight compartment which serve the requirements of individual crew members is provided by:

- roof lamp assemblies,

- spotlights,

- floodlights,

- storm floodlights,

- chart stowage lights.

Location of the control switches is such that each crew member has control of the lights at his station.

  • Roof lamps:

Two roof lamp assemblies are fitted in the centre of the flight compartment ceiling, one forward above the management panels, and one aft above the racking. Each assembly comprises two fluorescent tubes and three filament lamps. The assembly is housed in a reflector box, covered with a diffusion plate of opaque perspex fitted flush with the ceiling furnishings.

To reduce the intensity of the lighting above the flight engineer station, a simple masking plate was held in place by scratch strips, some of which are still original in our aircraft.

In 1976 the lighting in the equipment bay area was removed during the refitting for the purposes of the guided tours. There is still a Plexiglas plate to indicate the old location.

Spot lights:

Spot lighting for each crew member essentially allows map reading.

  • Pilot spotlight:

Located in the ceiling on the left, the "CHART LIGHT" control is located on the upper left side console.

  • Co-pilot spot:

Located in the ceiling on the right, the control is located on the right console.

  • Mechanic spot:

Located above the table. Lighting and light intensity are controlled by the "SPOT" potentiometer on the "LIGHTING" panel.

  • Spot observer:

Located on the ceiling behind the pilot, this spot is absent on the SA. Lighting and light intensity are controlled by a potentiometer.

  • Dashboard Panel Floodlights :

Filament lamps, mounted on the underside of the pilot's glare shields, floodlight the dashboard panels. Each lamp is fitted with a push-on cover containing a clear lens. The projected angle of light can be adjusted by swivelling the cover on the body of the lamp. The third crew members management panels are floodlit by filament lamps, fitted on the structure over the panels. The lamps are mounted in reflectors, the inside of which are painted white.

Centre floodlight assembly :

Left and right floodlight assembly:

Flight engineer management panels are floodlit by filament lamps:

Centre Console Floodlight:

Floodlighting for the centre console is provided by a filament lamp located in an assembly fitted on the roof centre line aft of the rear switch panel 4-211. The reflector assembly can be moved in one plane by turning an associated adjusting screw.

Storm Floodlights:

Additional floodlighting for the LH and RH dashboard panels is provided by a fluorescent storm floodlight mounted under each side glare shield. Additional floodlighting for the centre dashboard is obtained from a filament storm floodlight fitted in the assembly that accommodates the centre console floodlight.

This lighting is only used when the outside light is very intense.

Example thunderstorms, airport lighting.

It includes 2 fluorescent tubes which illuminate the pilot board and the co-pilot board as well as a spotlight directed on the central board.

The assembly is controlled by the rotary switch STORM, with 3 positions "OFF - LH/RH DASH-ALL" located on the ceiling at the top and on the left. In the "LH/RH DASH" position, it controls the ignition of the 2 fluorescent tubes On the "ALL" position, it controls the switching on of the 2 fluorescent tubes and the spotlight.

Chart Stowage Lights:

A filament lamp is mounted in an angle reflector under the rear of the left and right hand switch panels, 17-121 and 18-121 respectively. The reflector is of glass fibre, painted white on the inside.

Unlike production aircraft as shown in this drawing of the maintenance manual, in the SA, the lighting of the oxygen masks is not installed.
